Kids with food allergy

Written by coolaid on March 2, 2010

Nowadays, more kids are allergic to many different varieties of foods such as nuts, dairy products, wheat etc.  Other allergies such as pollen, weeds, dust can be controlled but food allergies of a child keeps parents on their toes.  This issue becomes more serious when they are eating out at a restaurant or on vacation.  They could be any where in the world but this food allergy will go with them wherever they are!!

One of the best approach of food allergies is, train your child who has food allergies so that child will ask each time he/she is given a new item to eat, “does this have any nuts?”  That way, in case if child is with another adult like grandparents, uncle or aunt, child is reminding them to make sure there are no nuts in his/her food.  Even sometimes, parents could be multitasking and accidently gives child food without checking if it has any nuts or not, but if child is trained, then there is always a check point.   This approach will minimize allergy attack.

But what to do if your child is too young to be trained?  Well, in that case, when you drop your child off at a play date or birthday parties, make sure to inform host ahead of time regarding food allergies. Also, don’t be shy asking what is host planning to serve when you call host ahead of time.  That way host will know that he/she is expecting one child with food allergy.  Also, when you drop your child off for birthday party or play date, also drop Epipen & Benadryl along with your cell phone number just in case of emergency.

Bottom line is, if you have a child with food allergies,  you are required to be proactive and prepare all the time to handle allergy issues at anywhere. Unfortunately there is no easy way out.

I think it is whole lot easier on parents if they simply pack food items for their child with food allergies. That gives them peace of mind and child doesn’t suffer. Its hard and tiring but as a parent you have to do for your child’s health. I have 2 kids with food allergies and I don’t go anywhere without packing their food items.
